(3) Choose Install Method, SSH or Raspbian Console

We are now ready to start the install Gentoo, we just need to decide the environment we want to execute the install.

Raspbian Console

You could use Raspbian as the host environment to do the install. All you need to do is open a console.

Because it is a default Raspbian install, the user name is pi and the password is "raspberry".

Alternative : SSH from your Linux Desktop PC

More advanced users, with a Linux Desktop PC would probably prefer to use SSH.

If you do SSH, now is a good time to visit your Router and sort out a fixed assignment of the IP address. Modern routers seem do everything with DHCP. Some of the better Routers can be pushed into doing static IP address, but many ISP supplied Routers can not. For that reason, I will provide instructions for DHCP for the Gentoo Install. If you would prefer a static ip, you probably do not need my help anyway :-)

ssh 192.168.xx.xx -l pi

Because it is a default Raspbian install, the password is raspberry.

First Job

Which ever method you choose, the first job is to log in as root.

sudo su

You "should" now change the passwords by using passwd command.

passwd

Enter new UNIX password:
Retype new UNIX password:
passwd: password updated successfully

passwd pi

Enter new UNIX password:
Retype new UNIX password:
passwd: password updated successfully

Next : Double Check the USB Hardrive location is /dev/sda
